Alumni Update #7 PDF Print E-mail

Thank you to all who attended alumni night. It was great seeing everyone and having a big crowd makes the meet more exciting and our wrestlers love having a large crowd screaming in support.

Since our last update, we’ve had a busy couple of weeks. Before Christmas, in a pair of home meets, we went 1-1, knocking off Watertown before losing to Winchester. We wrestled well in both meets and felt good about the team heading into the Lowell Holiday tournament.

Brian Ford led the charge at Lowell, earning an 8th place medal. Also advancing to the second day was sophomore Nick Makrys. Several others performed well, including senior Shane Morton, senior Mike Rallo, and sophomore Jimmy King.

We wrapped up vacation week with a New Year’s Eve quad hosted by Burlington. The Rockets wrestled tough in all three matches and walked away with three victories on the day. A great way to end the calendar year!

In JV action, 24 wrestlers took to the mat for the 2nd Annual Windham JV tournament. The round robin contest allowed each wrestler a minimum of three matches and several Rockets won their weights, going 3-0.

Strong Showing at Lisitano Tournament

The Rockets turned out a strong performance this past weekend at the Anthony Lisitano Memorial Tournament host by Wakefield High School.  The Rockets were led by senior Brian Ford who captured the individual title at 132lbs. On his way to the finals, Ford picked up a major decision and two pins.  With his 6-4 victory in the finals, Brian become Reading's 18th individual Lisitano champion since 1997.  Sophomore Jimmy King turned out a strong performance at heavyweight, reaching the finals via two pins and a decision.  In the finals, King lost a close match, loosing an 11-9 decision to his opponent from Greater Lawrence.

Five other Rockets placed and the team ended in 6th place with 126.5 points.  Placing for the Rockets were: Everett Roscoe (4th), Nick Makrys (5th), Mike Rallo (6th), David Graham (6th), and Tommy Beucler (6th).

Reading returns to action at home twice this week.  The Rockets host Watertown on Wednesday 12/21 and Winchester on Thursday 12/22.  Both matches start at 7:00PM.

Wednesday is also our annual Alumni Night match.  We hope to see you at the meet and join us for a post-match informal social gathering at an area restaurant.  Details will be announced at the meet.

Rockets off to Quick Start

Reading opened the season last Saturday (12/10) with a quad meet at Lawrence. In the first match, Reading won seven of ten contested matches and picked up a forfeit to beat Pentucket 42-15. The second match, against Whittier, turned into a battle with each team winning seven matches. There were four lead changes during the meet, but with six pins and a tech fall, Reading came out on top 41-39. The third match of the day pitted Reading against returning state champion Lawrence. The Lancers, currently ranked #2 on MassWrestling.com, were too much for Reading to handle, shutting down the Rockets 72-12.

Head Coach Craig Murphy was upset with last year’s 42-35 loss to Wakefield, Reading’s first loss to the Warriors since the 2003-2004 season, and pushed the Rockets to make sure his team was ready for Wednesday’s (12/14) dual meet in Wakefield. On the mat, it showed. Freshman Austin Tribiano led off the match with an 18-3 tech fall, starting the Rockets on 32-3 run. The Rockets rolled on, picking up nine wins and at decisive 47-26.

Reading returns to Wakefield tomorrow for the Anthony Lisitano Memorial Tournament.
